I was recently lucky enough to shoot Daan and Laura’s unofficial wedding ceremony in the unusual, but vibrant venue, Circomedia in Bristol. Following their formal marriage in Daan’s hometown of Amsterdam, the old church in Bristol for the practice of physical theatre and circus training, provided an exuberant destination for Daan and Laura to hold their second ceremony uniting them as husband and wife. After skyping lovely Laura, and checking out Circomedia myself, I was super excited to see what surprises the day would bring.
It all began with documenting the girl’s preparations, hosted in the Mercure Bristol Grand Hotel. Makeup artist ‘Able Mabel’, dolled up the bride Laura, along with her two bridesmaids, for the excitement up ahead. Accompanied by the third bridesmaid’s facetime presence, (for sadly she couldn’t make it because her mother was sick,) the party relaxed in their favourite company, and with their radiating laughter, the room was filled with a glowing atmosphere.
The first unexpected event of the day commenced with a minor disaster, as the Bristol airport shut after an aeroplane skidded off the railway. Daan and Laura expected a few guests from Amsterdam as well as Germany, who were all affected by the flight, having to fly instead to Birmingham. This caused the wedding a bit of inconvenience, but only heightened excited spirits.
When the guests arrived at the wedding party, they were greeted at Circomedia by an acrobat, who threw welcome petals from her high, hanging perch. The venue was breathtaking for all; decorated exquisitely, with amazing floral arrangements, all made by Laura’s friend.
The joyous mock ceremony began when Laura arrived and followed with delicious canapés, the belated arrival of the travelling guests, and finally a sit-down meal with a focus on PIES! Speeches divided up each course of the meal, causing erupting laughter, brimming the room full of smiles. The last event of the meal was as humorous as it’s happening; Daan and Laura ‘dug into’ their wedding cake (for the lack of a knife!)
The evening told some crazy dancing and professional aerial silk acrobatics! The newlywed couple beautifully danced their first dance, to the Fairytale of New York by The Pogues.
